Cranberries are the mavericks of the holiday season. Independent. Powerful. Made for the bold. Pumpkin Spice is nice, safe, and comforting. And, well, not-so-spicy. Cranberries pack a meaningful kick. Pumpkin spice puts us to sleep with memes. Want to wake up your senses? Pop a fresh cranberry in your mouth. Would your senses wake up if you ate a pumpkin seed? Probably not.

Some of us sleep through the holidays, some of us stumble through, and some of us face them head on, challenges and all. Holidays aren’t calm and comforting for everyone. Some of us yearn for a different kind of holiday. We want a blast of change. A fresh taste of life. We want bold moments. We want the cranberry.

Cranberries are the explorers, and know the sky has no limits. In 1968, cranberry sauce joined the Apollo 8 with three astronauts and went to the moon and back. Pumpkins stayed on the ground. Cranberries are enjoyed in space today, while NASA keeps trying to coax pumpkins to do something unusual every Halloween. Applesauce also made some orbiting rounds Isaac Newton probably never expected. John Glenn, the Ohio-born astronaut, was the first person to orbit the earth in 1962, and the first person to eat in space—but he was stuck with applesauce. As we get older, we eat bolder. We eat cranberries in space, and on holidays. Especially on Thanksgiving. Americans eat one-fifth of the four million pounds of cranberries consumed during the Thanksgiving holiday. (Big brother must be at the table watching you eat, counting the cranberries. That is why you shouldn’t bring your phone to the table.)

Be Bold: Shake Off the Twaddle

To be bold, you need to shake off the nonsense, the twaddle, the things that don’t improve your life, and the people that bring you down. Sometimes the twaddle is Netflix, YouTube, or Facebook. (Not this article of course.) Sometimes it’s your boss. Sometimes it’s just too many silly holiday demands, like having to buy people you don’t like a $5 gift for a Secret Santa party at work. The twaddle is like bad bacteria that infects your daily life—you have to deal with it to get rid of it. Cranberries have the power to resist and manage the flow. Powerful women who have had more than one UTI (millions) know that cranberries keep the bad bacteria from sticking to the urethra wall, so a wall of bad bacteria doesn’t build up. When you embrace the bold flavor of the cranberry, you have the power to shake things off, and kick out the unwanted, the meaningless, and the harmful. You’ll have more time for you if you do. When you’re happy, your happiness will spread to others. Happiness is a great gift to give.

 

Protect Yourself and Others

Cranberries are protectors. Full of flavonoids, they burst with the antioxidants quercetin and myricitrin. That cranberry kick that makes you wonder if you like cranberries? It’s protecting you. Myricitrin has been known to protect against diabetes and heart-related problems. Quercetin kicks cancer cells and protects the heart by slowing damage to LDL cholesterol. Cranberries may even protect your butt. Preliminary studies demonstrated that cranberries can inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells. You have to protect yourself if you’re going to protect others. Men and women can do that with cranberries. Let the Spice Girls and Taylor Swift drink their nice Pumpkin Spice Lattes. If you want it all this holiday season, and you want to kick some butt, grab the cranberries and give yourself the gift of health.

Do Great Things with Your Uniqueness

Sure, pumpkins have antioxidants and vitamins, but how much pumpkin is in that Pumpkin Spice latte? How often do you see Cranberry Spice Latte? Not often, because cranberries—every single one in the 859 million pounds produced just last year alone—are unique. Cranberries need unique conditions to grow when compared to other fruits, and cranberries have a unique style of providing health benefits because they carry a unique structure. Pumpkin spice is not unique.

Have a Festive Life, Respect Space

Do you want a standard holiday? Or do you want a festive life? Cranberries are festive. Red. Bright. Playful. A red ball. A red balloon. Light enough to throw without hurting someone. Pumpkins can be painful. Cranberries are welcome during the fall and winter festivities. Pumpkins take up a lot of space. Cranberries respect the space. The tartness of cranberries? It’s just like that witty shot of sarcasm you snickered to your best friend.

Smile Boldly

Some of us like our cranberries sweetened, because who wouldn’t want a sweeter adventure? Cranberries will help you get through the adventure of holiday family reunions. The bold fruit can give you a sweet smile and keep your mouth happy during all the cringe-worthy relative-filled holiday moments. The proanthocyanidin in cranberries keeps bad bacteria from sticking to your teeth, and you won’t get the stains that come with your Pumpkin Spice latte. Smile! The holidays are here!

Celebrate the holidays in bold style. Bite a cranberry, and be a maverick. Savor a blast of change. Grab the cranberries, and leave the pumpkin spice behind.
